Months before the general elections, the NDA government at the Centre Monday approved a 10 per cent reservation for the ‘economically backward’ among the general category in government jobs and admission to higher educational institutions. A bill to amend Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution will be moved in the Parliament Tuesday.

Sources revealed that the EWS category will be defined as families with income (includes agricultural income as well as from profession) below Rs 8 lakh per annum, possessing agricultural land below five acre and residential house below 1,000 square feet. As for urban areas, those with residential plot below 100 yards in notified municipality or residential plot below 200 yards in the non-notified municipal area.

In a surprise announcement, the Union Cabinet on Monday declared 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker upper castes. The timing of the announcement before the 2019 General Elections could play a big role in favour of the Narendra Modi government.

Experts say the NDA government has played its biggest electoral card since its formation in 2014. Upper class castes have also hailed the decision, which was a long-pending demand.

The government will soon table the proposal in Parliament.

The Union Cabinet has approved 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically weak sections in the general category , sources said on Monday.
The section doesn't get reservation as of now, the sources said.
This reservation will be over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation, they said, adding that the government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday.

The reservation will be given to those economically backward poor people who are not availing the benefit of reservation as of now," a source said.
The reservation benefit is likely to be availed by those whose annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and have up to five acres of land, he said.
Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementation of the decision, the sources added
